The Highlands
Tea country, mountain paths and cooler air. Thyolo, Mulanje and Zomba bring a different rhythm to Malawi: active mornings, agricultural heritage, forested escarpments and space to slow down between safari and lake chapters.

Thyolo
Thyolo introduces Malawi through working tea country, rolling cultivated landscapes and the stories of agriculture, labour and trade that shaped the south. It works best when time is allowed for a guided landscape walk, tasting or locally hosted food experience, subject to final agreement.
From Blantyre: approximately 45–75 minutes. To the Mulanje area: approximately 60–90 minutes.
Mulanje
Mount Mulanje changes the physical energy of a journey. Guests may choose a gentle foothill walk, a more demanding day hike or, where separately planned, a longer mountain experience. The premium lies in suitable guiding, realistic pacing and the freedom to change plans when conditions require it.
Mountain access, route and duration are confirmed according to weather, guide assessment and guest ability.

Zomba
Zomba's plateau, forest roads and viewpoints create a softer highland experience and a useful bridge between the south, Liwonde and the lake. It suits scenic walking, birding, photography and a slower day after more demanding activity.
From Blantyre: approximately 1.5–2.5 hours. To Liwonde: approximately 1.5–2.5 hours.
Highland Experiences
Selected with intentionality, these moments are subject to local conditions and seasonal agreement.
Estate Tastings
Deep dives into the sensory world of Malawian tea and coffee production.
Plateau Walks
Guided exploration through indigenous forests to hidden mountain viewpoints.
Culinary Immersion
Interactive sessions focusing on highland ingredients and heritage recipes.
Massif Views
Unrivaled panoramas that span from the highland peaks to the Mozambique border.
Activities are selected for their fit with the journey. They are not automatically included. Fitness, footwear, mobility and health considerations are discussed before an active programme is confirmed, and a lower-intensity alternative should remain available.
Activity Levels
Gentle
short estate or forest walks, viewpoints and food experiences
Active
half-day trails, uneven ground and sustained walking
Challenging
full-day Mulanje hiking with meaningful ascent and variable mountain conditions
Weather Logic
Clearer, drier periods generally favour longer walking days and wider views. Wetter periods deepen the landscape colour but can affect trails, visibility and transfer timing. Mountain weather can change quickly in any season.

Slower afternoons
Time for the viewpoints, birding, or the simple luxury of the highland air.
What partners should know
- The selected highland base changes route timing and is not interchangeable.
- Mulanje walking level, guide ratio, route and weather contingency must be agreed before sale.
- Estate access, tastings and hosted experiences require confirmed permissions and operating detail.
- Cooler conditions, rain and uneven paths require accurate packing and mobility guidance.
- Transfers must be judged against the previous and following journey chapters, not in isolation.
- Room, food, guide, vehicle, insurance and emergency evidence require due diligence before public claims.
